Londoneast-uk signs up first tenant as Arcus unveils plans for engineering training academy at new business and technical park

Londoneast-uk has secured its first tenant with the announcement that facilities management specialists Arcus Solutions is to open a technical training academy at the newly-created Londoneast-uk Business and Technical Park.

The centre will train Arcus Solutions’ engineers on refrigeration, mechanical and electrical systems for the firm’s facilities management portfolio which includes providing services to Sainsbury’s supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations.

Arcus say the academy, scheduled to open in Spring 2015, will focus on developing apprentices into future engineers while operating courses to upskill existing engineers on new systems and new innovations. Initially, Arcus aims to train around 100 people in the first year but plans to extend operations in the future – depending on internal recruitment levels and securing additional external training customers through other SME organisations.

Londoneast-uk Business and Technical Park is owned and operated by SOG Group, one of the UK’s leading independent science park operators, which is transforming 17 acres of specialist buildings and land, formerly owned by pharmaceutical giant Sanofi, into a multi-occupancy business and technical park to service London and the Home Counties.

SOG Group Managing Director John Lewis said: “I am delighted to welcome Arcus Solutions as our first tenant to Londoneast-uk.  Our aim has always been to attract as many businesses to the site with specialist skills as possible and Arcus certainly meets this criteria, as they are training apprentices into the engineers of tomorrow.”

Steve Willis, Managing Director of Arcus Solutions, said “Our colleagues really are what make the difference to the service we provide to our customers. We see our investment in the Arcus Solutions Technical Academy at Londoneast-uk as a vital long-term strategy for developing high quality engineers.

“We feel it is prudent to invest wisely in developing our own people so we have direct control of our own potential. As the first company to sign up at Londoneast-uk we see real opportunity at SOG’s new business and technical park and feel it is a great location to support Arcus Solutions growth plans for the future.”

Until recently Arcus Solutions has been servicing Sainsbury’s facilities on an exclusive basis but now Arcus Solutions is able to extend services to other businesses, offering facilities management, refrigeration, mechanical, electrical work and training on a wider range of engineering skills. Arcus Solutions employs 230 staff including 200 engineers servicing contracts in the South East over to the South West and up into the Midlands.  Arcus Solution’s sister company Arcus FM, is the managing agent for Sainsbury’s covering all areas of their estate across the UK, currently employing 410 staff nationwide.

Michael Ridgett, Head of People for Arcus Solutions, said: “We are very proud to be part of the new Londoneast-uk Business and Technical Park. The development of our academy is a key part of our strategy to develop exceptional engineers who can deliver outstanding service. Our intention is to not only develop our own colleagues at The Academy but to also work with the local colleges on apprenticeship schemes and help develop students from the surrounding areas into rewarding careers within the facilities management and engineering sector.”

The academy will consist of a 4,500 sq ft unit incorporating offices, conference room and two trainee workshops with a capacity to accommodate up to 30 candidates at any one time.

Initially it will operate on a part-time basis offering training to engineers servicing Arcus’s operations in the South east.  However, the company plans to extend the academy into a full-time national centre as internal recruitment numbers increase and external customers take advantage of Arcus’ specialist training expertise.
